Arizona to Wisconsin - Day 1

At the beginning of Shrek 2, Shrek, Fiona and Donkey travel to the land of Far, Far Away to visit Fiona's parents. The scene goes through various settings to demonstrate the distance they need to travel. At the end of this scene, Donkey begins to become annoying asking, "are we there yet?", repeatedly. Shrek, in exasperation, asks if Donkey could not be himself for 5 minutes. Wisconsin is our Far, Far Away, but my little donkeys didn't wait until the end to start asking. It took all of 100 miles into our 4,000 mile trip. To quote another of the kids' favorite movies, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, "It's going to be a bumpy ride."

We traveled from Phoenix to Albuquerque today, relatively uneventfully, if you ignore our gas station visit (only 1 today in our 467 mile day).

[Trip Stats Day 1]

We pulled into a popular truck stop chain location to gas up in Winslow, AZ. Because the gas there was about 6 cents cheaper than the other stations nearby, cars were lined up 5 and 6 deep for about 6 banks of pumps. Every cent counts when you're putting in as much gas as we are, so we were willing to wait... which is more than I can say for the party in the Chevy. I guess they were entitled to go ahead of everyone else, but I didn't know. It was time for me to move forward, so I put the RV in gear and started to ease forward when I saw something maroon moving in the corner of my eye. I immediately stopped, they did, and, since they were cutting in front of other people, I decided I had the right-of-way and moved forward... to get greeted by an angry horn. I continued to move forward and watched them shoot around the gas islands and off somewhere else.

That, I thought, was the end of the story. I stepped out of the RV to stretch my legs while waiting a few more minutes for our turn. I looked up and saw the maroon Chevy backing up to a gas pump in front of several other people. They were better than everyone else politely waiting their turn in line. I was perturbed... for about 5 minutes until I realized I was on vacation.

[Welcome to New Mexico]

We're in New Mexico now... on to Colorado in the morning.
